In the heart of the enchanting rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His life was essentially untarnished, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was mainly to care for his herd of rams.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the wind among the solo tree on the peak were his constant co-dwellers. Day upon day, watching over his responsibilities imbued in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. In one such instance out of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous plan.
Tales of wolves hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One day he ran into the village website screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but discovered no beast.
The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This trick continued for a few more days. But, one noon, a real wolf actually attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once broken, is tough to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was in the past.
